Here is Luke being presented with his trophy by Suzanne Slee, Managing Director of WBTA and Mr Meyrick Sheen who hosted the evening as 'Jack'.

The event took place in the Tower Hotel, Jersey Marine and was hosted by Meyrick Sheen. The night was about recognising and celebrating achievement.

The event begun by recognising learners who achieved their qualifications within the period 1st August 2008 to the 31st July 2009. These included Hairdressing, Customer Service, IT, Management, the A1 Assessor Award and the V1 Internal Verifiers Award.

Next, each candidate who had been nominated for the ‘Learner of the Year’ was presented with a certificate of excellence - all nominees deserve recognition, not just because of their hard work and commitment but also because they have in some way been recognised for their own efforts and achievements over and above the scope of the qualification or job they are doing. The 6 category winners were – Sophie Parry of Styling Studio for Hairdressing Level 1, Ffion Megan John of Funkees Hair Studio for Hairdressing Level 2, Luke Davies of Bernie & Co for Hair Level 3, Gemma Parry of St. Helens Medical Centre for Customer Service, Rhoda Monks of Swn Y Mor for IT and Catherine Cooper of Thomas Group Holdings for Management.

WBTA Learner of the Year 2009 went to Luke Davies of Berny & Co. His employer Bernadette said “ Luke has achieved his levels 1 and 2 and is now working on his level 3 which is helping him develop more and more. He is always full of enthusiasm and has already built up an impressive clientele of his own. He recently took second place in a Head & Shoulders competition. Luke has achieved so much in a short space of time – and early in his hairdressing career, not just through his talent but through his commitment in everything he undertakes. Opening a salon after 32 years in the industry was frightening but Luke’s support and confidence tipped the scales for the better and he is now running part of a very successful business”.

The Mayor Councillor Mrs Pam Thomas and the Mayoress Mrs Susan Sudnic were also at the event and the Mayor brought the evening to a close with her final address.
